Typical Portuguese Desserts

Portuguese finish each lunch with a sweet dessert and coffee. The Portuguese translation of word dessert is “sobremesa“, literally meaning “over table”. This word refers to the time people spend drinking and talking around the table once a meal is done. While it’s true that post-meal chatter is normal in private dinner parties around the world, “sobremesa” is a distinct cultural tradition that originated in Spain adopted also across Portugal. Below is my suggestion of the most popular desserts you can usually find in local restaurants.
