Thanks to its geographic location characterized mainly by a warm-temperate subtropical climate, the agriculture is one of the main economic activities in Portugal. There are plenty of agricultural corporations, but also many local farmers taking advantage of favorable farming conditions. In Porto, you can find several covered markets where the local fruit, vegetables, eggs, cheese, butchery and other products are being sold. Further, due to its ocean proximity and strong fisherman tradition, you can also find a variety of fresh fish, seafood and other sea creatures. Below, I have described the best indoor markets, called in Portuguese “mercado”, both modern as well as traditional, you can visit in Porto. I hope you enjoy them and get some local products 🙂 If you search for even more authentic experience, check the best street markets (called in Portuguese “feiras”) in this blog.
- Mercado do Bolhão – Bolhão Market is the most popular market in Porto located close to Aliados square. It was opened to public in 1914 and renovated in 2022. The dominant characteristic of the Bolhão market is its surrounding building with beautiful façade. You can find here everything – meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, mushrooms, flowers, etc. After renovation, it became a lot tourist and in my opinion not so authentic as before, but it is definitely a must visit while in Porto.

- Mercado Bom Sucesso – Mercado Bom Sucesso is a bright, indoor, modern market offering local food. It was renovated in 2021 to introduce a new trendier concept of several small restaurants, shops and stalls where you can buy the local fresh food, drinks, pastries and other products.

- Mercado Municipal de Matosinhos – Located right next to the ocean and the Port of Leixões, Mercado de Matosinhos is the right place to buy your daily fresh fish, seafood or fruit and vegetables. The market is also reachable by the metro (stop Mercado).

- Mercado Municipal De Angeiras – Belonging to the same group of markets as Mercado Matosinhos, Mercado de Angeiras also offers a wide variety of fresh fish and seafood thanks to its location right next to the ocean. In the back part, there are also few shops with local products, fruit and vegetables. It is definitely worth a visit due to its traditional fish market atmosphere.

- Mercado Beira-Rio – This market located in Vila Nova de Gaia keeps traditions alive as it offers local fruits, vegetables, wines, food and craft products all in one place. The space is small, but ideal for those who want to try the local cuisine.

- Mercado da Foz do Douro – This cozy market combining tradition with innovation offers fruit and vegetable stands, florists and casual eateries, plus seasonal concerts.

- Mercado Ferreira Borges – Mercado Ferreira Borges, located in Porto’s historic São Nicolau district, is a striking example of 19th-century iron architecture. Completed in 1888, this red-painted structure was designed by architect João Carlos Machado to replace the older Mercado da Ribeira. Despite its grand design, it never fully served as a market due to merchants’ reluctance to relocate. Over the years, the building has been repurposed for various uses, including as a warehouse and a community kitchen. In 2010, it was transformed into a cultural venue known as Hard Club, hosting concerts, exhibitions, and other events.

- Time Out Market Porto – Located right next to the famous São Bento railway station, Time Out Market features the best local chefs, restaurants, bars and cultural experiences. It was opened in May 2024 so come and visit this brand-new must-visit of Porto.
