Getting Around Portugal Like a Local: Everyday Portuguese

Moving to Portugal is a big step. Now your days are filled with sunny afternoons, friendly smiles, and maybe a few “Wait… how do I say this?” moments. Once you settle in, the next challenge is feeling confident in everyday situations. Whether ordering your morning coffee, asking for directions, or chatting with the neighbour, speaking like a local makes life easier and much more enjoyable.

Anita da Silva, certified language teacher and founder of Portuguese With Anita, knows which phrases and habits help you integrate into Portugal faster. Here are Anita’s 5 essential tips for using everyday Portuguese and navigating your new home like a pro.

Master the Art of Small Talk

A quick exchange with your local baker or supermarket cashier in Portugal can turn a routine errand into a friendly moment.

  • Learn the staples: Bom dia (“Good morning”), Boa tarde (“Good afternoon”), and Boa noite (“Good evening”).
  • Add warmth with phrases like Tudo bem? (“All good?”) or Está um dia bonito, não é? (“It’s a beautiful day, isn’t it?”).

By showing you’re open to conversation, you’ll be seen as approachable and soon start picking up local expressions.

Politeness Goes a Long Way

Courtesy and good manners are very important in Portuguese culture. Two little phrases, Desculpe (“Excuse me”) and Com licença (“With your permission”), can make daily interactions so much better.

Use them when:

  • Asking for help: Desculpe, pode ajudar-me? (“Excuse me, can you help me?”)
  • Passing in a crowd or entering a busy café: Com licença

These small words not only show respect, but they also make people more willing to help you.

Order Food Like a Local

Knowing the right words makes you sound more natural, whether in a traditional tasca or a café.

  • Queria… (“I would like…”) is softer and more polite than Eu quero…
  • When everything is perfect, say: Está tudo ótimo! (“Everything is great!”)
  • To ask for the bill: A conta, por favor.

If you’re in a small town, don’t be surprised if you hear Fica para a próxima (“We’ll settle it next time”) when they can’t give you exact change; it’s a sign of trust.

Ask for Directions with Confidence

Even with maps on your phone, sometimes you just need to ask a real person.

  • Onde fica…? (“Where is…?”)
  • Vira à esquerda / direita (“Turn left / right”)
  • É longe? (“Is it far?”)

Locals often shorten street names, so Avenida da Liberdade might be “Liberdade”. Don’t be afraid to ask for clarification.

Embrace the “Desenrascar” Mindset

Life in Portugal sometimes moves differently; buses might be late, shops might close unexpectedly, and plans can change at the last minute. The key is to stay flexible and positive.

Keep these sentences handy:

  • Sem problema (“No problem”)
  • Não faz mal (“It’s okay / Don’t worry”)
  • Pode ser amanhã? (“Can it be tomorrow?”)

Desenrascar, this easygoing approach, is part of the Portuguese culture. Adopting it will help you feel less foreign and more like a local. Speaking Portuguese daily isn’t about perfection; it’s about connection. The more you use these phrases, the more you’ll be able to greet neighbours warmly and deepen your sense of belonging. Start small, stay consistent, and soon enough, you’ll navigate Portugal just like the locals.
