Where to Buy Food in Porto: Best Supermarkets Locals Love

If you’ve just moved to Porto or are staying long-term, one of the first things to sort out is where to shop for groceries. Porto offers a wide range of supermarkets, from big-name chains to neighborhood spots, all offering different prices, vibes, and product selections. Here’s a local-friendly guide to the best supermarkets in Porto, including where many locals actually shop. Please note the biggest supermarkets with the best selection are located outside of city centre.

  • Pingo Doce – One of the most popular chains in Portugal, Pingo Doce is known for its affordable prices, reliable quality, and ready-to-eat meals. Their in-house bakery and lunch section make it a favorite for quick, decent food on the go. Bonus: many stores are centrally located and open daily. My tip: get a Pingo Doce club card and get special promotions, usually when you buy over certain amount. I also like their fresh fish and seafood counter.

  • Continente – You’ll find Continente in all shapes and sizes – from large hypermarkets to smaller “Continente Modelo” stores. It’s ideal for a full weekly shop with fresh produce, meat, fish, and even international sections. Locals often use the Continente Card app for regular discounts. They also have a solid fresh fish and seafood counter. My tip: when in Continente, do not miss their restaurant and a very good and cheap combos, such as breakfast combo, etc.

  • Mercadona – This newer Spanish chain has quickly gained fans in Porto. Mercadona offers excellent own-brand products (some imported from Spain), great prices, and tidy, well-stocked stores. Their fresh sections and efficient service stand out. If you like discounts, promotions and club cards, forget about Mercadona, they do not operate on this model.

  • Lidl – A go-to for budget-conscious shoppers, Lidl has a loyal local following. It’s great for basics, bakery items, and occasional international specials. While selection is more limited, the prices and quality balance make it worthwhile. They do not have a fresh fish and seafood counter, however, they have special discounts for club card holders, so do not forget installing one while living in Porto!

The larger stores (e.g., in Gaia or shopping centers) are great for stock-up trips. They also have special discounts for the Auchan club card members. My tip: If I need an international products, they usually have them in Auchan.
